Aaron Garlick in Taos

Aaron Garlick Biography

Born and raised in Taos, NM (1988) Aaron grew up surrounded by art and creativity. His mother is an accomplished artist, as was is grandmother. Aaron’s art education, for the most part has been informal, however, he was a live in apprentice to Sherrie McGraw and David Leffel who were both long time teachers at the Art Students League in New York. He has won a number of awards for his portraiture, he continues to focus on capturing the personality of the people and land he loves to draw and paint.

Born and raised in Taos, NM (1988), Aaron Garlick was immersed in a world of art and creativity from an early age. "Drawing has been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember," he reminisces. With an artistically accomplished mother and grandmother, Aaron's artistic journey began against a backdrop of familial talent. In his late teens, he gained recognition for his portraiture, clinching several awards. "Observing my mother and her artist friends pursue their passion was inspiring, but it wasn't until I sold those award-winning pieces that I truly believed in my own potential," he reflects.

Aaron's artistic expression is a quest to capture the essence of his subjects. Informed by classical techniques while embracing contemporary perspectives, his work is a dynamic blend of tradition and innovation.

"I consider myself a portrait artist, extending that portrait-focused gaze even to landscapes, which I see as portraits of the natural world. More precisely, my aim is to visually articulate the essence of whatever I'm portraying. The interplay of paint, colors, shapes, and tones serves this purpose. My approach varies from abstract to realistic, guided by the nature of the subject. Ultimately, while I strive for aesthetic appeal, my true intention is to reveal the underlying beauty that lies beneath the surface," he explains.
