Ila McAfee (1897 - 1995)


Born in Gunnison, Colorado, the painter Ila McAfee studied at Western State College of Colorado and the Art Students League and National Academy of Design in New York.  McAfee first came to Taos, New Mexico in 1926, moving there permanently in 1928 along with her artist husband, Elmer Turner .  She was one of the many artists employed by the WPA to paint murals, McAfee exhibited work in the Denver Art Museum and the Governor’s Gallery in Santa Fe.  Her murals were painted in the US Post Offices in Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado.  Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Stark Museum, the Gilcrease Museum and the Denver Art Museum in Colorado in addition to the Museum of New Mexico.  The artist is known for her paintings of horses, animals and the Taos Pueblo.
